Princeton Brass Band Gave US Premiere of Original Beatles Song!?!

On May 1, 2005, The Princeton Brass Band may well have given the US premiere of an original Beatles song for brass band. Entitled 'Thingumybob' (1968) the piece was written by Paul McCartney for a television program of the same name and, having failed to record it successfully in London, recorded it in Yorkshire with the Black Dyke Band on June 30, 1968 (as Lennon was finishing 'Good Night' for the so-called 'White Album' ['The Beatles'].

The recording produced by McCartney was released as 45 single on Apple, interestingly as being by 'McCartney/Lennon' on some record labels, along with 'Yellow Submarine' (in which Black Dyke also recorded the famous blast of brass after the words 'And the band begins to play.....'). The piece certainly sounds 'Pepperish' (re: 'Sgt. Pepper' of 1967) with a typical backward glance from McCartney at music of the past - in this case a ragtime march style (apparently it was written along the lines of his father James' song "Walking in the Park with Eloise").

A few days later McCartney - who started life as a trumpeter and whose grandfather apparently played Eb bass in a brass band - was playing flugel horn on Lennon's 'Dear Prudence'.

Brass bands should be proud to have an original Beatles number in their repertoire and the Princeton Brass Band plans to feature it regularly in their programming.
